In short

Shipping to Bali means moving goods into Indonesia under Indonesian customs rules — so the right transport mode, complete documentation, realistic transit times and a cost broken out by line are what decide whether cargo arrives legally, on time and undamaged.

  • Costs run from under USD 100 for documents to several thousand for a container
  • Transit is 3-7 days by air, 6-8 weeks by sea from Western origins
  • Accurate packing lists, values and HS codes are what prevent surprise charges

Sea or air: the arithmetic, not the sales pitch

Sea freight is the default for households, furniture, stock and building materials. A full container load gives you a dedicated 20ft or 40ft box, faster handling and control over loading, at 6-8 weeks door-to-door from the UK, the US and Europe and 4-6 weeks from Australia and Southeast Asia.

Below a full container, shared space (LCL) is priced per cubic metre — roughly USD 150 to USD 300 per m³ on most Indonesian lanes, with a one-cubic-metre minimum. Consolidation and deconsolidation add a week or two at each end, which is the real cost of sharing.

Air freight into Ngurah Rai International (DPS) is 3-7 days and priced on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher — USD 5 to USD 15 per kg with a minimum charge of USD 200 to 500. A bulky but light item, a large canvas for instance, is where this bites.

The crossover is around 1-2 m³ or 150-200 kg. Past that, sea wins on cost by a margin air cannot close. Most sensible moves split: priority items by air, everything else by sea.

Containers

What fits in what

Volume is the single number that decides most of your quote, so it is worth measuring rather than estimating. Multiply length by width by height in metres, per package.

20ft · 28-30 m³

A 2-3 bedrooms household with furniture, appliances and personal effects, or about ten pallet positions. Door-to-door USD 3,000 to USD 7,500.

40ft · 56-58 m³

4+ bedrooms, or a household combined with business stock, or about 22 pallet positions. Usually only 20-40% more than a 20ft, so cost per cubic metre is lower.

Shared container

Under about 12-15 m³ you pay for the space you use. Ideal for a few boxes, a motorbike or a small furniture consignment.

High cube and specials

A 40ft high cube adds a foot of height and seven to eight cubic metres. Open-top for crane loading, flat racks for anything too wide or too heavy to go through doors.

Customs

What Bea Cukai actually wants

Indonesia applies the Harmonized System, so classification decides the rate. Everything else is documentation.

  1. 01

    HS classification

Furniture sits in HS Chapter 94, electronics in 85, and the rates differ. Duty across categories runs 0% to 40% of CIF value, plus VAT at 11% and in some cases luxury goods tax.

  2. 02

    Personal effects

Used household goods owned for over a year, declared properly and supported by a KITAS or KITAP, get preferential treatment and sometimes clear duty-free. New items in the same container do not.

  3. 03

    The document set

Commercial invoice, detailed packing list with quantities and weights, and a bill of lading or air waybill. ISPM 15 for wooden packaging, phytosanitary for plant-based materials, certificate of origin where required.

  4. 04

    Prohibited and restricted

Narcotics, firearms, ammunition, pornography and counterfeit goods are banned outright, with severe penalties. Telecommunications devices, pharmaceuticals, food and used vehicles need permits. Alcohol and tobacco are capped.

  5. 05

    Filed before arrival

PIB for commercial goods, PIBK for personal effects, submitted electronically ahead of the vessel so clearance begins before it berths. Free storage at Benoa expires, and demurrage after that is daily.

Under-declaring value is the most expensive mistake available here. Bea Cukai runs its own valuation, and a discrepancy means re-evaluation, fines and storage charges while the container sits.

How to read a quote

Three things to check before comparing two numbers against each other.

  • Is it itemised?

Origin charges, main freight, destination charges, customs brokerage, duty estimate, insurance and local delivery should be separate lines. One number with "all inclusive" next to it is not comparable to anything.

  • What is excluded?

Ask explicitly. Import duty, quarantine fees for certain items, villa access works and storage are the usual omissions, and they are not small.

  • Door or port?

A quote that looks unusually cheap is normally port-to-port being presented as door-to-door. Compare the same scope or you are not comparing.

Send the inventory and we will do the arithmetic

Origin, destination in Bali, rough volume and your date. You get back a mode comparison, a container recommendation and an itemised quote — typically under 24 hours.
